British Values in the Early Years
At West Exe Nursery School, British values are taught in an age‑appropriate and meaningful way through everyday interactions, play, and experiences.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, these values include democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. We embed these values naturally into our practice, helping children develop a strong sense of belonging, fairness, and respect for others.
We celebrate the richness of the cultures within our community and see diversity as a strength. Children are encouraged to share their home experiences, traditions, and languages, allowing everyone to learn from one another.
We are proud to have many talented children who are already bilingual, and some who are growing up trilingual. Their linguistic and cultural knowledge is valued and shared, helping all children develop curiosity, empathy, and an appreciation of the world around them. Through this inclusive approach, we support children to grow into confident, respectful, and thoughtful members of society. We also recognise that promoting British values in the Early Years forms an important part of our Prevent duty, supporting children to develop positive self‑identity, respect for others, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging from the very earliest stages.
